Whether you are a newcomer to road races, whether you are a runner, jogger or racewalker, follow these guidelines to make the experience as pleasant and memorable (for the right reasons) as possible.
- To ensure you are easily identifiable, pin your race number on as directed. The normal format is your race number on the front and your CGA license number on the back of your vest/top.
- Pay attention to announcements made at the start area and make sure you are in the correct starting group for the race that you have entered, i.e. 10 or 21km, running or walking race. Different distances often start at different times, especially on bigger events.
- Place yourself at the start where you expect to finish - middle of the field; third quarter or so on. There is nothing more frustrating than having a slower runner or walker blocking your way, or more demoralizing than being overtaken by hundreds of athletes faster than you. If in doubt go towards the back of the field - the camaraderie here is great!
- In winter months or on rainy days: Do not discard black bags or temporary warm /dry clothes on the road as others can trip over them.
- When running or walking in a group or as a ‘bus', be aware of those behind you who might be trying to get past. Don't line up across the width of the road; try to be in single file as much as possible. If you hear someone trying to get past move across as soon as possible and let him or her pass.
- If you are running in a large bunch, offer fellow runners a water sachet, as they may not be able to get to the side of the road to receive one themselves.
- If you have decided that you will not be using a refreshment table move towards the centre of the road, allowing others easy access to them.
- When you overtake someone don't just cut straight in from of him or her. Give them a few meters before you try to take your original line. Especially with walkers who tend be far more upright than runners and stride further forward.
- Don't suddenly stop in the middle of the road. Someone is bound to run or walk into you! If you feel the need to tighten your shoelaces, or simply need to stop for a rest, move across to the side of the road before stopping. Chaos will result if you suddenly stop without warning.
- If you want to take a slow walk at a refreshment station, do so only once you have taken your drink and moved out of the way of runners behind you.
- Always take note of the instructions given to you by marshals throughout the race. If the police are on the course, listen to them.
- Thank the marshals and refreshment station workers - they are all volunteers.
- Endeavour to use the litter bins for your black bags, sachets and bottles or drop them at the next refreshment station.
- Do not waste water sachets - only take what you need.
- Use portable toilets or toilets at service stations (garages) - do not foul private property. Leave the toilet in the condition you would like to find it.
- Be courteous and mindful of others when blowing your nose, passing wind, spitting and spraying water.
- It is a good idea to carry some toilet or tissue paper with you for emergencies.
- Be patient if you are stopped to let traffic through - be considerate to marshals and motorists.
- Do not overtake in the finish tunnel - congratulate and share your experience with friends and club members.
